BAG DIY: Painted Rainbow Striped Round Crossbody Bag

I painted this bag in 2019. I would use different fabric paints if I did this project again, probably Angelus leather paints. For some odd reason, this bag is still very sticky. Just like the instructions say, I did wipe down the bag before painting. This product seems like it's discontinued now, Perhaps the stickiness is why the product was discontinued. I don't know, I'm not DecoArt. Since 2-19, I've used more fabric paints. My current favorites are Angelus leather paints, Jacquard Textile and Lumiere fabric paints and recently the Michaels version of the Tulip Soft fabric paints called Make Market. It's better to use fabric paints, as they're formulated to adhere well to many different fabrics, including leather and vinyl.

  • White or cream round purse - Mine is from Five Below
  • DecoArt Stylin'
    • Fuchsia
    • Red
    • Orange
    • Yellow
    • Green
    • Turquoise
    • Purple
    • White
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper plates - Great paint palette
  • Paper towels
  • Cup of water

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Make sure the bag is clean. If it is dirty, wipe down the bag with a soapy wet cloth. The bag must be clean and dry for the paint to adhere well.

2) My bag has diagonal V stitching on one side and nothing on the other. It's ok if your bag doesn't have the V stitching. On one side of the bag, using a small flat brush and the Stylin' paint colors, paint concentric circles in rainbow order. These do not need to be perfect. For the bright green, I mixed green with a little yellow and more white on the paper plate. Continue the circle pattern around to the side. Let fully dry before handling again.

3) On the other side, paint lines in a centered V, in rainbow order.

4) Using a flat and small liner paintbrush, paint the handle in rainbow order. Look over the bag and give any areas a 2nd coat where needed before moving forward to adding details.

5) Mix contrasting colors of the Stylin' paint colors, using basic color mixing to lighten or darken the colors. Using the small liner paintbrush, add simple lines, dots, and curves to make patterns on the bag.

I'm working on updating my blog to feature more of my artwork, so I have a place other than Instagram to send people to. It will take some adjustment to well just typing on a keyboard instead of my phone.  Feels like a lifetime ago since I was blogging regularly, especially since Alex was still a teenager in these photos and she's an elementary school teacher now. I know right!? Plus we moved back in September 2019, meaning these photos are from our old front yard. Wacky how time works. Head over to my Instagram and TikTok for updates on artwork. Some things won't make it here, as is the nature of my creation process. Regardless, my art is getting documented somehow.
