JEWELRY DIY: Acorn Cap Earrings
Yesterday, I found two perfect acorn caps, so I decided to make some earrings. These earrings are great to wear all through Autumn or for a nature lover. If you don't find just the cap, you can carefully remove them from an acorn and leave the nut for the squirrels. This is a great project for kids, as you can go on a nature walk to find acorn caps and make things with them when you return home. You can use them for other projects too, but I'm partial to jewelry. Ok onto the tutorial
SUPPLIES:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) With your paint brush and Mod Podge Matte, carefully seal the acorn top. Make sure to get into the crevices. Let dry completely.
2) Fill the inside of the acorn cap with hot glue till it's almost to the top. Set them upside down to dry for about 5 minutes, or till cool.
3) Add a little E6000 to the back of one earring stud blank. Press it into the back of the acorn cap, centered. Repeat for the other set. Set them upside down to dry for a couple hours.
TIP: Use a small bowl of dry rice to hold the acorn caps upside down while drying.
That's all for this tutorial. Have fun collecting your acorn caps. You might be able to use the tops of pinecones too. Make sure to seal those well, so they will stay together. Happy Makery!

- E6000 glue
- 2 Earring stud blanks and backs
- Acrylic Paint (OPTIONAL) - Since acorn caps are wood, they take paint well. If you want, paint them any color before sealing them with Mod Podge
- Glitter (OPTIONAL) - Add some Mod Podge Gloss, a sprinkle of glitter, and another coat of Mod Podge Gloss for sparkly acorn caps

Just a thought if you wanted to do a dangle earring instead: You could drill a tiny hole in the center, thread some jewelry string through with a bead, then attach the string to fish hook style earring pieces. They'll make cute studs too though!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips. I wear more studs than dangles. If I found more acorns, I'd likely use eye pins, beads, and lever back hooks, as that is my favorite method of constructing dangle earrings.
