COSTUME: DIY Weeping Angel Part 2

Me and 80+ blog buddies got together to bring you 80+ DIY Halloween costumes, including my Weeping Angel Costume! I'm teaming up with Jamie Dorobek and her handmade Halloween costume site, Really Awesome Costumes to bring y'all tons of easy ideas to craft up 88+ DIY Halloween costumes for everyone including your pets, family costumes, and even a trunk or treat idea! After my tutorial, there are blog hop links to all the other costumes.

For this Halloween, my daughter chose to be a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who. The Weeping Angels are villains who send you back into time if they catch you. They 1st appear in the episode "Don't Blink" and are featured in other episodes in later seasons. This is one of the most intricate costumes I've made for my daughter. My tutorials for the dress, wings and mask over on the Fairfield World Blog. They sponsored this costume by providing the fabric for the dress. Krylon provided the stone textured spray paint for the mask and wings. This costume is included in a huge Halloween Blog Hop.

Costuming requires a lot of attention to detail to make a concept into a reality. Though it's important to get the big pieces right, it's also important to get the details right. From the makeup, to hair, to what shoes you're wearing, it's all important. When you are wearing a costume for Halloween, a party, or a convention, it's as important to look good as be comfortable. You'll likely be standing for hours, so know what works best for you. Onto the tutorials and tips.

MAKEUP
I chose to paint my daughter's skin grey, which took about 30 minutes. It washed off great in the shower. You can limit the amount of skin you body paint by wearing a long grey shirt and gloves. I'll explain that in a little bit. However, if you are wearing this warm weather, you want to use body paint. There are high quality body paints available. I used what I had on hand.
  • 2-3 Tubes of white cream makeup/body paint - I used cheap makeup from Party City
  • 1 Tube of black cream makeup/body paint
  • 1 Small foam brush
  • 1 Bowl - I used a foam bowl
1) Squeeze a lot of white cream makeup into the bowl. Add a little black.
2) Stir makeup together with the foam brush until blended.
3) Apply makeup to any visible skin using the foam brush. Use strokes for large sections and pouncing for small areas. Make sure to get around the hair line, ears, armpits, around the dress edges, around the fingers, and the palms. Those are areas that might be forgotten, but are important to cover too. Mix more grey paint as needed.

HAIR (PAINTED OR WIG)
I chose to use the same grey body paint to paint her hair. Alternatively, you can use grey colored hair spray (though it is very messy) or a wig painted grey. Alex has long hair, so I was able to twist it up in a bun. However if you have short hair like me, you'd need to wear a wig styled into a bun.
  • A hair brush
  • An elastic ponytail holder
  • Bobby pins - I used black ones that blend into my daughter's hair
  • A nice hair spray
  • 1 Tube of white cream makeup/body paint
  • 1 Tube of black cream makeup/body paint
  • 1 Small foam brush
  • 1 Bowl
1) Put long hair up into a high ponytail, using the brush and hair elastic.
2) Twist hair and circle into a bun.
3) Use bobby pins to secure the bun.
4) Spray hair liberally with hair spray. Do this in sections, so you can breath in between. This will make painting the hair much easier.
5) Mix the grey paint into a bowl as instructed above.
6) Using the foam brush to apply the paint all over the hair. Make sure to get around the hair line and into the crevices of the bun.

NAILS
If you are painting the hands, you'll need to apply grey or silver nail polish to the nails. The body paint doesn't easily stick to nails. I painted a silver nail polish on my daughter's clean nails. There are a few brands that sell grey polishes. I used what I had on hand.

GLOVES
Alternatively, you can use grey fabric paint on long formal white or silver gloves. You can vary the grey shades for a more stone look. Make sure to have wax paper inserted between the glove fabric, to prevent it from sticking together while wet from paint. If Halloween is going to be cold here, I'll like do this for my daughter.

SHIRT
If you can't find long formal gloves that fit you or need more warmth, use a long sleeve white shirt and short white gloves. You can use Rit Dye in Pearl Grey to dye the shirt and gloves. Use grey fabric paint to add some color variance for a stone like effect.

TIGHTS
If you are in a cold climate, tights are a must with a dress. Buy white cotton tights and dye them grey with the same Rit Dye in Pearl Grey. Since your feet will be barely viable, so there is no need to paint your tights. Plus this way you'll have a great pair of grey tights for your wardrobe needs.

SHOES
You can either use flats or sneakers, depending on your comfort level and how much walking you will be doing. If you have grey ones, wear those. Otherwise use grey fabric paint and a paint brush to alter your shoe's color. White sneakers and flats will be best for painting. Use the same Rit Dye to color your sneaker laces.

A couple more costume photos, just for fun. Hope you have fun making this costume, or any of your choosing. Happy Makery and Halloween!
