NYC FASHION WEEK F/W 2013: Catherine Malandrino

Catherine Malandrino's Fall Winter 2013 2014 collection is full of lace and geometric patterns. I love seeing a collection like this. Lately, I've been obsessed with lace and geometric patterns...so the combo makes me extra happy. There is a nice mix of pieces, that will work on a large range of sizes and shapes. From a body conscious tight dress and tailored separates to a slouchy off shoulder dress and draped shawl collar coat, the fit range is delightful. The styling with outerwear, tights, gloves, and boots is practical for cold Fall and Winters. Falls in Virginia tend to be mostly warm, so the laces and sheer fabrics would still be wearable then, though the options to layer are definitely presented in this collection.

Though I love a large portion of this collection (what images I've shared here), I do have a few absolute favorites...and that was hard to choose. I love the 2nd look, which is a sheer patterned blouse, a curved hip velvet skirt, patterned tights, and black boots. The curved shape and solid color of the skirt helps balance out the tightness and business of the blouse and stockings. The skirt has a hem pattern that compliments the designs on the blouse and tights, but it's not overly busy. My other favorite is the 12th look, which is a draped front leather coat, paired with a textured long pencil skirt, a sheer blouse, and boots. I can't see what the blouse style is, but both the skirt and blouse are just backdrops to the amazing coat. I love draped pieces because of the sculptural forms the draping creates. These also work well on a variety of body shapes, as it conceals any body "flaws". Though I dislike leather, this fabric does lend itself to nicely structured drapes. The same could be achieved with a nice faux leather too. Overall, this collection is gorgeous, and definitely a favorite from New York fashion week.

I've selected a few pieces to share, but to see the full collection, watch the fashion show.
