NYC FASHION WEEK S/S 2013: Kate Spade

Kate Spade is known for her handbags, so I wasn't aware that she'd branched out into clothing. However, her Spring Summer 2013 collection is bright, cheerful, and pleasantly surprising. There is a 60s mod vibe with artistic inspiration from Piet Mondrian. Since she started her handbag line, many years ago, I've always gotten a "ladies who lunch" impression about her clients. This collection gives me the same impression, but for a younger set of ladies. The windowpane,  bow print, bright florals, stripes, gingham, and color blocking have a nice graphic sharpness. The color palette has many pastels but mixed with the hot pink, white, and black, they don't feel precious, like pastels can be. For all of the looks, check out the video below, that has close up footage of the detailed looks.

Of all the great pieces, my favorites are the 3rd look with the Piet Mondrian inspired mini dress. I love this time period of bold art, with the grid paintings of Mondrian being some of my favorites. The basic shape of this dress shows off the print well. I love that it's a piece of walking art. My next favorite dress is the 11th look, which is a black bow print on a white background. Lately, I've been enjoying more feminine details, like bows, and this falls into the range of both girly and bold. The short bubble hem shows off the legs and makes them look longer. It also defines the hips, creating a smaller waist and bust. I'm a fan of a fluffy skirt that give the impression of a larger bottom. I've heard no complains about this shape. My last favorite is also a dress, the 13th look. I love the stark black and white stripes, with the cut out bust. I love the quirky styling with the polka dot tights, and candy box like bag. I love a good simple black and white stripe. There is a thin belt with a sunglasses buckle that accents the waist. It's funny, even though most of my current wardrobe is black and cream, in delicate fabrics, I would instantly wear most of this collection, if given the chance. That's mostly due to the strong 60s mod inspiration to the collection, which is again my favorite time period of art...but also of fashion.
